Ava's Notebook puts her name front and center, written in flowing script across a soft watercolor apple blossom design.
Behind the Name lists Ava as a variant of Eve. Wikipedia traces it to the 8th and 9th centuries as a short form of Germanic names containing the element aw-, of uncertain meaning, such as Avagisa and Awanpurc, and says the Oxford Dictionary of First Names supports that Germanic origin. The same dictionary suggests the modern name could also be a new invention. Wikipedia says it gained popularity in the 1950s through Hollywood actress Ava Gardner, and that the American socialites Ava Lowle Willing and her daughter Ava Alice Muriel Astor also helped popularize it.
Ava is short already, so the sources give relatives rather than nicknames. Behind the Name lists Avah, Aviana and Avianna as English variants, with Eva and Eve as close cousins, and Wikipedia connects it to Avis and Aveline. An Ava can grow into an Aviana or stay a crisp three letters.
Ava Gardner signed with MGM in 1941, drew critics’ attention in The Killers (1946), and starred in Show Boat, Mogambo and The Barefoot Contessa. Filmmaker Ava DuVernay was the first Black woman to win the directing award in the US dramatic competition at Sundance, and for Selma (2014) became the first African-American woman nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Director. And singer Ava Max broke through in 2018 with “Sweet but Psycho”, which reached number one in 22 countries.
Ava is a 21st-century star. US Social Security data has it entering the girls’ top 200 at 16th in the 2000s, then climbing to 5th in the 2010s, when nearly 156,000 American girls were named Ava. Wikipedia says it was still the ninth most popular name for American baby girls in 2024, so most Avas are children and teens.
Ava’s rise was sudden. Wikipedia reports that in 1998 it jumped 268 places, from 618th to 350th, possibly helped by Heather Locklear and Richie Sambora naming their daughter Ava in 1997. Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe followed in 1999, and Phillippe said they named their daughter after Ava Gardner.
