Give Marion a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Marion's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Marion is a French pet form of Marie. Behind the Name calls it a medieval French diminutive of Marie, the French Mary, and Wikipedia says English speakers have used it since the Middle Ages, sometimes also treating it as a form of Margaret or Margery. Behind the Name gives the Biblical Hebrew original as Miryam. Behind the Name has a separate entry for Marion as a men’s name, from a French surname derived from the girls’ name, which is how John Wayne came to be born Marion Robert Morrison.
Behind the Name lists Marian and Merrion as English variants and Manon, Marielle, Mariette, Marise and Maryse as French relatives. Manon is the chic French choice, and Marielle the romantic one.
Architect Marion Mahony Griffin, one of the first licensed women architects in the world, was instrumental in envisioning the design for Canberra, Australia’s capital; the couple moved to Australia when her husband, Walter Burley Griffin, was appointed to direct its design and construction in 1914. French actress Marion Cotillard won the Academy Award for Best Actress for playing Édith Piaf in La Vie en Rose (2007), the only Oscar ever won for a French-language performance. And Marion Bartoli won the 2013 Wimbledon singles title without losing a set.
Marion peaked in the Jazz Age. US Social Security data has it at 74th in the 1890s, 51st in the 1910s and 47th in the 1920s, its biggest decade, when more than 55,000 American girls were named Marion. It was still 88th in the 1930s and 145th in the 1940s before leaving the top 200. Most American Marions are now great-grandmothers, while the name stays familiar in France.
John Wayne was a Marion. Wikipedia says the actor nicknamed “Duke” was born Marion Robert Morrison in Winterset, Iowa, in 1907, and appeared in 179 film and television productions. Marion Mahony Griffin, meanwhile, was so skilled a draftswoman that one scholar said she “did the drawings people think of when they think of Frank Lloyd Wright”.
Marion’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Marion’s Notebook” on the cover tells Marion it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Marion’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
