Lucy's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Lucy is a name of light. Behind the Name calls it the English form of Lucia, in use since the Middle Ages, from the Latin root lux, “light”. Wikipedia traces it to the Latin men’s name Lucius and explains the sense as “of light”, perhaps for a child born at dawn or in daylight. Lucy also came to England as a surname after the Norman Conquest, Wikipedia says, from Normandy place names based on Lucius.
Behind the Name lists Luci and Lucia as English variants, and Wikipedia gives Luci and Lucie as alternative spellings. The French family adds Luce, Lucette and Lucille, and Lucinda is the literary relative, so a Lucy has plenty of fancy versions to grow into.
Lucy Maud Montgomery, published as L. M. Montgomery, wrote Anne of Green Gables (1908), which made Prince Edward Island a literary landmark; she published 20 novels and more than a thousand short stories and poems. Abolitionist and suffragist Lucy Stone was the first woman from Massachusetts to earn a college degree and famously kept her own name after marrying. And Lucy Liu broke through on Ally McBeal and starred in Charlie’s Angels and Kill Bill.
Lucy has come full circle. US Social Security data has it at 49th in the 1880s and in the top 100 through the 1910s, then fading and dropping out of the girls’ top 200 after the 1940s. It returned at 179th in the 2000s and jumped to 54th in the 2010s, its biggest decade, when more than 42,000 American girls were named Lucy. So a Lucy notebook works for a great-grandmother or a 10-year-old.
The world’s most famous fossil is a Lucy. Wikipedia says the skeleton known as Lucy, about 3.2 million years old, was found in Ethiopia in 1974 and named after the Beatles song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”, which was played loudly and repeatedly in the expedition camp all evening after the team’s first day of work there. Her Amharic name is Dinkʼinesh, “you are marvelous”.
This is a notebook for every kind of Lucy: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Lucy’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Lucy’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
