Lillie's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Lillie is a variant of Lily, and Behind the Name says it can also be a pet form of Lillian or Elizabeth. Art collector Lillie P. Bliss is a good example: her birth name was Lizzie Plummer Bliss. Lily itself comes from the flower, a symbol of purity.
Through Lily and Elizabeth, Lillie has a big family. Behind the Name lists Lilly, Lilian, Lillian and Lilibet, and from the Elizabeth side Libby and Lizzie. Lilibet is the royal touch.
Lillie Langtry, “the Jersey Lily”, grew up on the island of Jersey, moved to London in 1876 and was painted by artists of the aesthetic movement before becoming a stage actress and producer. Lillie P. Bliss lent works to the 1913 Armory Show, helped found the Museum of Modern Art in 1929, and left 150 works that formed the basis of its collection, including Cézanne, Seurat, Gauguin and Matisse.
Lillie was a 19th-century hit. US Social Security data has it at 39th in the 1880s and 41st in the 1890s, with its biggest numbers in the 1920s, about 29,000 girls, before it faded to 168th in the 1940s. Today Lily and Lilly have taken over, which makes Lillie a vintage choice for a new baby.
Lillie Langtry made advertising history. Wikipedia says that in 1882 she became the face of Pears soap, making her the first celebrity to endorse a commercial product. Her nickname, “the Jersey Lily”, shows that Lillie and Lily were used interchangeably even then.
This is a notebook for every kind of Lillie: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Lillie’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Lillie’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
