Give Layla a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Layla's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Layla means “night” in Arabic, says Behind the Name; Wikipedia gives the root as layl, “night” or “dark”. The name is tied to Layla and Majnun, the old Arab love story of the poet Qays and his beloved Layla, which the Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi retold in 1188. Behind the Name says English speakers took it up after the 1970 song “Layla”.
Behind the Name lists Laila, Leila, Leyla, Lela, Lila, Lilah, Lyla, Lylah and Leilah as variants, and Wikipedia adds Laylah. Lay or Lala work as pet names, though neither source lists them.
Layla Moran, a former math and physics teacher, has been the Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West and Abingdon since 2017 and chairs the Health and Social Care Committee. With the Laila spelling that Behind the Name lists, boxer Laila Ali retired undefeated after holding several world titles; she is the daughter of Muhammad Ali.
Layla has climbed fast. US Social Security data has it at 131st in the 2000s and 28th in the 2010s, when more than 63,200 American girls were named Layla. Behind the Name shows it in the top 50 in England and Wales and in New Zealand in 2025.
Eric Clapton’s “Layla”, recorded with Derek and the Dominos in 1970, was inspired by Nizami’s The Story of Layla and Majnun, a copy of which Clapton had been given by Ian Dallas. Wikipedia says the tale of a young man driven mad by love mirrored Clapton’s own feelings for Pattie Boyd, then married to George Harrison; Clapton and Boyd later married.
Layla’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Layla’s Notebook” on the cover tells Layla it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Layla’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
