What does the name Kimberly mean?

Kimberly comes from the city of Kimberley in South Africa, named after Lord Kimberley in the 19th century. His title came from a place in Norfolk, England, whose name seems to mean “clearing of a woman called Cyneburg”, from Old English. The same Lord Kimberley also gave his name to the Kimberley region of Western Australia. As a first name, Kimberly has been used since the mid-20th century.

Kimberly nicknames and other forms

Kim is the classic nickname, and Kimmy, Kimmie, Kimber and Kym are all common too. The British spelling Kimberley is just as popular, and you’ll also see Kimberlee. Double-check which one she uses before you buy, as this notebook spells it Kimberly.

Some famous Kimberlys

Kimberly Williams-Paisley made her name in Father of the Bride (1991). In the UK, Kimberley Walsh, with the British spelling, sang with the girl group Girls Aloud. And engineer Kimberly Bryant founded Black Girls Code in 2011 to teach girls computer programming.

Kimberly through the decades

Kimberly is a child of the 1960s and ’70s. US Social Security data has it at 5th in both the 1960s and the 1970s, with nearly 260,000 Kimberlys born in the 1960s, and still in the top 200 in the 2010s. Most Kimberlys today are in their 40s, 50s and early 60s, juggling work, family and everything else.

Did you know?

The Kimberley is the northernmost of Western Australia’s nine regions, bordered by the Indian Ocean and the Timor Sea. The South African city of Kimberley came to prominence in the late 19th century, during the Boer War. Wikipedia also lists Kimberley as a unisex name, though in practice it is overwhelmingly used for girls.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Kimberly is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Kimberly on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
