What does the name Kennedy mean?

Kennedy comes from an Irish surname, says Behind the Name, an anglicized form of Ó Cinnéidigh, from the Old Irish given name Cennétig. That name meant either “armored head” or “misshapen head”. Wikipedia says the Irish scholar Patrick Woulfe derived it from ceann, “a head”, and éide, “armor”, and read it as “helmet-headed”. As a boys’ name, Wikipedia adds, it can be rendered in Latin as Kinnedius.

Kennedy nicknames and other forms

Behind the Name lists Kennedi as a feminine spelling, and Wikipedia adds Kenedi and Kennedie. In everyday use Kennedy often becomes Kenny or Ken, though the sources do not list those.

Some famous Kennedys

Lisa Kennedy Montgomery, known simply as Kennedy, was born in Indianapolis and raised by her mother in Lake Oswego, Oregon, with her two brothers. Wikipedia says she hosted MTV’s late-night alternative-rock show Alternative Nation through much of the 1990s, and Behind the Name credits her with making Kennedy a name for girls. She later became a radio and TV host.

Kennedy through the decades

Kennedy is a recent girls’ name. US Social Security data has it at 121st in the 2000s and 68th in the 2010s, when more than 38,500 American girls were named Kennedy. Behind the Name notes that the name was also given in honor of President John F. Kennedy.

Did you know?

The first Cennétig was a royal father. Behind the Name says the Old Irish Cennétig was the name of an Irish king who was the father of Brian Boru. So the surname Kennedy, which reached the White House with John F. Kennedy, goes back to the name of an Irish king.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Kennedy is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Kennedy on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
