A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Kay. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Kay is usually a short form of Katherine and other names that start with K, says Behind the Name, and Wikipedia adds that it is also used as a name in its own right. There is a second, older Kay too: Behind the Name traces it to the Welsh Cai or Cei, possibly from the Roman Gaius, the name of one of King Arthur’s knights.
Kay is already a nickname, so its relatives come from Katherine. Behind the Name lists Kaye and Kae as variant spellings, along with Kate, Kathy, Kit and Kitty, and Katie as a pet form.
Kay Thompson, born Catherine Louise Fink in St. Louis in 1909, created Eloise, the little girl who lives at the Plaza Hotel. Wikipedia says Thompson lived at the Plaza herself, and the first book, Eloise (1955), was illustrated by Hilary Knight. She was also MGM’s top vocal arranger, sang “Think Pink!” in Funny Face, and was Liza Minnelli’s godmother.
Kay peaked in the 1940s. US Social Security data has it at 136th in the 1930s, 98th in the 1940s, when more than 32,600 American girls were named Kay, and 149th in the 1950s. As a short, crisp name it has a lot of grandmothers and great-aunts today.
In the Arthurian legends, Sir Kay is King Arthur’s foster brother and his seneschal, and one of the first Knights of the Round Table. Wikipedia says later stories made him sharp-tongued and boorish, but in the earliest Welsh tales he was one of Arthur’s finest warriors, often paired with Bedivere.
Whether Kay is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Kay on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Kay’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
