Karen's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Karen is the Danish short form of Katherine. Katherine comes from the Greek name Aikaterine, whose origin is debated, but in early Christian times it became linked with the Greek word katharos, meaning “pure”, and its spelling changed to match. Karen moved from Denmark into the English-speaking world in the 1930s and soon became a favorite there.
In English, Karen is also spelled Caren, Caryn and Karyn, and Karena is a longer form. In Swedish and several other European languages the name is Karin. And because it comes from Katherine, every Karen is related to the Kates, Katies, Katyas and Catherines of the world.
Danish author Karen Blixen wrote Out of Africa, under the pen name Isak Dinesen. Karen Carpenter was the lead singer and drummer of the Carpenters, the duo she formed with her brother Richard. And Scottish actress Karen Gillan played Amy Pond in Doctor Who.
Karen took off in the US after World War II. Social Security data has it 16th in the 1940s, 8th in the 1950s, when more than 330,000 Karens were born, and 4th in the 1960s. It stayed in the top 200 until the 2000s, so most Karens today are in their 50s and 60s, often with grown-up kids and plenty of plans of their own.
Through Katherine, Karen is linked to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, whose spiked wheel later gave its name to the Catherine wheel firework. Karen Carpenter was admired by other musicians for her rare three-octave contralto voice. And in Denmark, where the name comes from, Karen has its own relatives, such as Kaja and Ina.
This is a notebook for every kind of Karen: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Karen’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Karen’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
