What does the name Kara mean?

Kara has several origins. Behind the Name calls it a variant of Cara, and Wikipedia says that in English it is usually taken from the Italian endearment cara, “beloved”, or the Irish word cara, “friend”. In Turkish, Behind the Name adds, kara means “black, dark”, and in Norse mythology Kára was a valkyrie.

Kara nicknames and other forms

Cara is the main variant Behind the Name gives, along with Karaugh, and Wikipedia mentions the Norse Kára. Kara is short already, so it rarely needs shortening.

Some famous Karas

Distance runner Kara Goucher was born in Queens and grew up in Duluth, Minnesota. Wikipedia says she won silver in the 10,000 meters at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka and ran for the US at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. She finished third in her marathon debut in New York in 2008, and third in Boston the next year. In college, at the University of Colorado, she won three NCAA titles.

Kara through the decades

Kara peaked in the 1980s. US Social Security data has it at 147th in the 1970s, 105th in the 1980s, when more than 27,500 American girls were named Kara, and 138th in the 1990s. Wikipedia says Kara overtook Cara as the more popular spelling for American girls by 1967, though Kara had been used in the US since at least the 1890s.

Did you know?

Supergirl is a Kara. Wikipedia says the original Supergirl, Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, first appeared in Action Comics #252 in May 1959, created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino. She was the last survivor of Argo City, which escaped Krypton’s explosion. Melissa Benoist played her as Kara Danvers in a TV series that began in 2015.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Kara is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Kara on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
