Jade's Notebook puts her name front and center, written in flowing script across a soft watercolor apple blossom design.
Jade comes from the precious stone, Behind the Name says, and the word comes from the Spanish piedra de ijada, “stone of the flank”, from an old belief that jade cured kidney pain. It came into use as a given name in the 1970s, and was unisex at first but is now mostly feminine.
Behind the Name lists Jada, Jaida, Jayda and Jayde as English variants, and Wikipedia adds Giada, the Italian form. Wikipedia says Jada and Jayda have both been popular with American parents in recent years. Jade itself is short enough that it rarely needs a nickname.
Gymnast Jade Carey won the floor exercise gold at the 2020 Olympics, and at the 2024 Games she won bronze on vault as a member of the US “Golden Girls” team. Wikipedia says she also competed for the Oregon State Beavers in college, winning seven Pac-12 titles.
Jade is a modern classic. US Social Security data has it at 154th in the 1990s, 110th in the 2000s, when more than 30,200 American girls were named Jade, and 121st in the 2010s. Wikipedia says it was the most popular name for newborn girls in France in 2022.
Jade isn’t one mineral but two. Wikipedia says the word covers nephrite, a silicate of calcium and magnesium, and jadeite, a silicate of sodium and aluminum. Nephrite was carved in China from Neolithic times, and jade was prized by Mesoamerican cultures such as the Olmecs and the Maya.
Any Jade, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.
There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Jade can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
How big is Jade’s Notebook? About the size of a trade paperback book: 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm), 160 lined pages.
