Isabel's Notebook puts her name front and center, written in flowing script across a soft watercolor apple blossom design.
Isabel began as the medieval form of Elizabeth in southern Europe. Behind the Name calls it Occitan and Wikipedia calls it Spanish, but they agree it was royal by the 12th century. Wikipedia explains the shift: Spanish speakers heard Elisabeth as “El Isabeth”, dropped the “El”, and swapped the ending to -bel, perhaps helped by bella, “beautiful”.
Behind the Name gives a long list of English pet forms: Bell, Bella, Belle, Ibbie, Isi, Issy, Izzy, Libbie, Libby and Sabella. Spanish and German speakers use Isa, and Portuguese speakers also say Belinha. Isabella, Isobel and Ysabel are the best-known variants.
Chilean-American novelist Isabel Allende made her name with The House of the Spirits (1982), often compared to the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez. Wikipedia says her novels have been translated into more than 42 languages and sold more than 77 million copies, and President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014.
Isabel has had two lives in America. US Social Security data has it in the bottom of the top 200 from the 1880s to the 1910s, then back again at 185th in the 1990s and 93rd in the 2000s, when more than 36,000 American girls were named Isabel. It was still 142nd in the 2010s.
In Spanish, Queen Isabella of Castile is Isabel I. Wikipedia says she reigned from 1474 to 1504, ruled a united Spain with her husband Ferdinand II of Aragon as the Catholic Monarchs, and financed Christopher Columbus’s 1492 voyage to the New World. Behind the Name notes she was one of two Spanish queens regnant called Isabel.
Any Isabel, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.
There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Isabel can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
How big is Isabel’s Notebook? About the size of a trade paperback book: 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm), 160 lined pages.
