Iria's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Iria is a Galician and Portuguese name. Behind the Name says it is possibly a form of Irene, from the Greek Eirene, “peace”, and notes that the etymology is uncertain. It was the name of a 7th-century saint from Tomar in Portugal, also known as Irene, and of an ancient town in Galicia that is now part of Padrón.
Behind the Name lists Irene as the Portuguese variant and Erea as a Galician one, and gives Irineu as the masculine form. Further afield the same family includes Irena, Irina and Eirene. Iria itself is short, so it rarely needs shortening.
Iria Grandal, born in A Coruña in 1990, is a Spanish archer. Wikipedia says she took up archery at seven, finished third in Spain’s junior championship at fourteen, and competed for Spain at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. She is a good namesake for a girl who likes to aim high.
Iria has never been an American name. It does not appear in the girls’ top 200 of the US Social Security decade tables, from the 1880s through the 2010s. In Spain it is another story: Behind the Name ranks it 35th in Galicia and 65th in Spain as a whole in 2024, so an Iria notebook is a rare find outside Europe.
Saint Iria gave a Portuguese city its name. Wikipedia says Irene of Tomar, Santa Iria in Portuguese, was martyred around 653 and her body was thrown into the Nabão River, which flows into the Tagus. It was recovered near the town of Scalabis, which was renamed Santarém, “Saint Irene”, in her honor. Her feast day is October 20.
This is a notebook for every kind of Iria: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Iria’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Iria’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
