What does the name Hazel mean?

Hazel is the English word for the hazel tree and its light brown color, from the Old English hæsel. Behind the Name says it was coined as a given name in the 19th century and quickly caught on, reaching 18th place for American girls by 1897. Wikipedia adds that before about 1865 Hazel was rare and mostly masculine in the US, and that a sympathetic character in Steele MacKaye’s 1880 play Hazel Kirke helped make it a girls’ name.

Hazel nicknames and other forms

Behind the Name lists just one diminutive, Haze. Wikipedia gives the spellings Hazell, Hazelle, Hasel and Heizle, and says newer names like Hazelee and Hazelyn might be variants too. For most families, Hazel is short enough already.

Some famous Hazels

Hazel Scott, born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, won scholarships to Juilliard at eight, became a jazz and classical pianist, and in 1950 became the first Black American to host her own TV series, The Hazel Scott Show. Tennis player Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman won 45 US titles and founded the Wightman Cup for British and American women. And Hazel Hawke, wife of Australian prime minister Bob Hawke, worked in social policy and raised awareness of Alzheimer’s disease after her own diagnosis.

Hazel through the decades

Hazel has had two American lives. US Social Security data has it at its best rank, 23rd, in the 1890s, and with its biggest count in the 1920s, when nearly 59,000 American girls were named Hazel. It fell to 155th in the 1940s and out of the top 200, then returned at 85th in the 2010s. Wikipedia says it has been in the US top 50 since 2017, helped by Hazel Grace Lancaster of The Fault in Our Stars.

Did you know?

Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman earned a royal-sounding nickname. Wikipedia says she was known as the “Queen Mother of American Tennis” or “Lady Tennis” for her lifelong participation in and promotion of women’s tennis.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Hazel is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Hazel on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
