Hattie's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Hattie is a pet form of Harriet, say Behind the Name and Wikipedia, though Wikipedia adds that it has long been used on its own. Harriet is the English version of the French Henriette, a feminine form of Henri, so Hattie is a distant cousin of Henry and Harry.
Hatty is the main variant spelling. Behind the Name lists Hallie as related, and its Harriet entry gives the rest of the family’s pet forms: Etta, Ettie and Hettie.
Hattie McDaniel won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Gone with the Wind (1939), becoming the first African American to win an Oscar, though she had to sit at a segregated table at the ceremony. Wikipedia says she was also the first Black woman to sing on radio in the US.
Hattie is a 19th-century classic. US Social Security data has it at 33rd in the 1880s and 46th in the 1890s, and still 106th in the 1910s, when more than 16,400 American girls were named Hattie. It left the top 200 after the 1930s, so a Hattie today has a name few classmates share.
The first woman elected to the US Senate was a Hattie. Wikipedia says Hattie Caraway of Arkansas was appointed in 1931 after her husband, Senator Thaddeus Caraway, died in office, then won the seat herself in 1932 with help from Louisiana’s Huey Long. She was also the first woman to preside over the Senate and the first to chair a Senate committee.
This is a notebook for every kind of Hattie: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Hattie’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Hattie’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
