Harriet: meaning and origin

Harriet is the English form of the French Henriette, Behind the Name says, which makes it a feminine form of Harry. Wikipedia traces the family back to the Germanic Heimiric, from heim, “home”, and ric, “power, ruler”. The name was first used in the 17th century and became very common in the English-speaking world by the 18th.

Nicknames and variants

Harriet has some of the best nicknames around. Behind the Name lists Hattie, Hatty, Hettie, Hallie, Etta and Ettie, and Wikipedia adds Hetty and Harri. Longer cousins include Henrietta and Harriette.

Famous people named Harriet

Harriet Tubman, born Araminta Ross around 1822, escaped slavery in 1849 and went back about 13 times to lead some 70 people to freedom. Wikipedia says she later claimed she “never lost a passenger”. During the Civil War she guided the raid at Combahee Ferry, which freed more than 700 people, and she is widely credited as the first woman to lead an armed military operation in the United States.

Harriet stayed in the US girls’ top 200 for 70 years. Social Security data has it at 90th in the 1880s, 112th in the 1910s and 130th in the 1920s, its biggest decade, with more than 20,800 American girls named Harriet, and 183rd in the 1940s. Wikipedia says it was 73rd in England and Wales in 2007.

Harriet trivia

One famous Harriet was a tortoise. Wikipedia says Harriet, a Galápagos tortoise first named Harry, lived to an estimated 175 and died in 2006 at Australia Zoo, owned by Steve and Terri Irwin. A story claims Charles Darwin collected her in 1835, but Wikipedia notes he never visited Santa Cruz, the island she came from.

With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.

The little things that make it hers
