Harper's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Harper comes from an English surname for someone who played or made harps, from the Old English hearpe, says Behind the Name. Wikipedia adds that it can also come from the Norman le Harpur or the Gaelic Mac Chruiteir, “son of the harper”. As a girls’ first name it is very much a 21st-century choice.
Neither Behind the Name nor Wikipedia lists a formal nickname or variant for Harper. It is a two-syllable name that rarely gets shortened, so most Harpers keep it whole.
Harper Lee wrote To Kill a Mockingbird (1960), which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and has sold more than 30 million copies. Its narrator, Scout Finch, and her father Atticus became American classics, and Gregory Peck played Atticus in the 1962 film. Lee received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007.
Harper is the newest name in this batch. It never made the US Social Security top 200 until the 2010s, when it went straight to 16th, with more than 85,100 American girls named Harper. Behind the Name says it entered the girls’ top ten in 2015, and Wikipedia says it was 10th in 2021. Behind the Name also ranks it 15th in New South Wales and 23rd in England and Wales in 2025.
Harper Lee mostly went by Nelle. Wikipedia says Harper Lee was primarily her pen name, and Nelle was her grandmother’s name, Ellen, spelled backwards. Her childhood neighbor in Monroeville, Alabama, was Truman Capote, the model for Scout’s friend Dill, and she later helped him research In Cold Blood.
This is a notebook for every kind of Harper: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Harper’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Harper’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
