Giselle: meaning and origin

Giselle comes from the Old German element gisal, “hostage, pledge”, says Behind the Name. It may first have described a child given as a pledge to a foreign court. A sister and a daughter of Charlemagne bore it, and so did a daughter of the French king Charles III who married the Norman leader Rollo in the 10th century. Adolphe Adam’s ballet Giselle (1841) made it known in English.

Nicknames and variants

Behind the Name lists Gisele and Gisselle as variant spellings, and Gisela and Gisa in German. Gigi and Elle are playful short forms in English.
