What does the name Candace mean?

Candace comes from the hereditary title of the queens of Ethiopia mentioned in the Book of Acts, says Behind the Name, and it apparently derives from the Meroitic word kdke, “queen mother”. Some Bibles spell it Kandake, after the Greek. The Puritans took it up as a given name after the Reformation, and a character in the 1942 movie Meet the Stewarts helped popularize it in the 20th century.

Candace nicknames and other forms

Behind the Name lists Candi, Candy and Kandi as English diminutives, and Candice, Candis, Candyce and Kandace as variant spellings. Candy is the classic sweet choice for a little Candace.

Some famous Candaces

Candace Parker, born April 19, 1986, is widely regarded as one of the greatest WNBA players of all time. Wikipedia says she led Tennessee to national championships in 2007 and 2008, and as a redshirt freshman became the first woman to dunk in an NCAA tournament game. The first overall pick in the 2008 WNBA draft, she won titles with the Los Angeles Sparks, the Chicago Sky and the Las Vegas Aces.

Candace through the decades

Candace is a 1980s name. US Social Security data has it at 116th in the 1980s, when more than 25,100 American girls were named Candace. Behind the Name says it last ranked in the US top 1,000 in 2005, at 925th, and it was 99th in Canada in 1988.

Did you know?

The original Candaces were queens of Kush. Wikipedia says kandake was a Meroitic title for a queen or queen mother of the Kingdom of Kush, which Greek and Roman writers mistook for a personal name. In 25 BC the kandake Amanirenas attacked the Roman-held city of Syene, today’s Aswan, and Emperor Augustus destroyed the Kushite city of Napata in retaliation. The Greek geographer Strabo wrote about a “one-eyed Candace”.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Candace is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Candace on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
