What does the name Gianna mean?

Gianna is an Italian short form of Giovanna, says Behind the Name, and a Modern Greek variant of Ioanna. Giovanna is the Italian Joanna, the feminine of Giovanni (John). Wikipedia says that in English Gianna is translated as Jane, Jean, Joan, Joanne or Joanna.

Gianna nicknames and other forms

Behind the Name lists Gia, Giannina and Nina as Italian diminutives, and Giana as an English spelling. Gia is the short form most Giannas end up with.

Some famous Giannas

Gianna Beretta Molla was a pediatrician born in Magenta, Italy, in 1922, who studied medicine in Milan. Wikipedia says she worked with the poor and the elderly, and in 1962, pregnant with her fourth child, she refused treatment that would have ended the pregnancy and died one week after giving birth. She was canonized in Saint Peter’s Square on May 16, 2004, with her husband and children present, the first time a husband had witnessed his wife’s canonization.

Gianna through the decades

Gianna is a rising name. US Social Security data has it at 120th in the 2000s and 82nd in the 2010s, when more than 34,600 American girls were named Gianna. Behind the Name says it spiked in 2020 after Gianna Bryant and her father, Kobe Bryant, died in a helicopter crash.

Did you know?

Gianna Nannini is one of Italy’s best-known rock singers. Wikipedia says she was born in Siena in 1954 and studied piano and composition in Milan. In 1990 she and Edoardo Bennato sang “Un’estate italiana”, the official song of that year’s FIFA World Cup in Italy, composed by Giorgio Moroder.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Gianna is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Gianna on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
