Genevieve's Notebook puts her name front and center, written in flowing script across a soft watercolor apple blossom design.
Genevieve is the English form of the French Geneviève, says Behind the Name, from the medieval Genovefa, whose origin is uncertain. It may come from Germanic words for “clan, family” and “woman”, or from a Gaulish word for “kin”. Wikipedia says it can also be read as “woman of the family”.
Behind the Name lists Ginette as a French diminutive and Veva as a Spanish and Portuguese one, and connects Geneva and Neva to the name in English. Plenty of families also shorten it to Gen or Viv, although the sources do not list those.
Saint Genevieve is one of the patron saints of Paris. Wikipedia says she was born around 420 and moved from her hometown of Nanterre to Paris, where her prayers were credited with saving the city from Attila and the Huns in 451. She helped build a basilica in honor of Saint Denis, and her feast day is January 3.
Genevieve was a favorite in the early 1900s. US Social Security data has it at 120th in the 1900s, 82nd in the 1910s and 110th in the 1920s, when more than 24,700 American girls were named Genevieve. It fell out of the top 200 after the 1930s.
Missouri has a town named after her. Wikipedia says Ste. Genevieve was founded by French Canadian colonists and settlers from east of the Mississippi, traditionally dated to 1735, although a historian has argued for a founding around 1750. It was the first organized European settlement west of the Mississippi in present-day Missouri and is now home to Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park.
Any Genevieve, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.
There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Genevieve can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
How big is Genevieve’s Notebook? About the size of a trade paperback book: 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm), 160 lined pages.
