Where does the name Eleanor come from?

Eleanor comes from the Old French form of the Occitan name Alienòr, Behind the Name explains. Its most influential early bearer, Eleanor of Aquitaine, was reportedly named after her mother Aenor with the Latin phrase alia Aenor, “the other Aenor”, though both Behind the Name and Wikipedia note there may have been earlier Eleanors. The name spread in medieval England through her and two queens of the next century, Eleanor of Provence and Eleanor of Castile. Wikipedia says it was popular in the first half of the 20th century and has been well used again in the 2020s.

Other forms of Eleanor

Eleanor has one of the richest sets of short forms of any name. Behind the Name lists Ella, Ellie, Elly, Elle, Nell, Nellie, Nelly, Nora, Norah, Lenore and Lenora, and Wikipedia adds Nella and Leonora. Spellings vary too: Elinor, Eleanore and Eleanora all appear in the lists.

Well-known Eleanors

Eleanor of Aquitaine was Queen of France as the wife of Louis VII and Queen of England as the wife of Henry II, ruled Aquitaine alongside two of her sons, Kings Richard I and John, and was one of the wealthiest and most powerful people in Western Europe. Eleanor Roosevelt, the longest-serving first lady of the United States, took a leading role in shaping the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. And Eleanor Catton won the 2013 Booker Prize for The Luminaries, the youngest author ever to win it, at 28.

Eleanor’s popularity

Eleanor has had two American peaks. US Social Security data has it climbing from 118th in the 1880s to 31st in the 1910s and its best rank, 29th, in the 1920s, its biggest decade, with nearly 75,000 girls. It fell to 120th in the 1940s and out of the top 200, then came back at 61st in the 2010s, when just over 40,000 American girls were named Eleanor.

A few more things about Eleanor

Eleanor Roosevelt earned a worldwide nickname. Wikipedia says that when the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, it gave her a standing ovation, and President Harry S. Truman called her the “First Lady of the World”.

A notebook for every Eleanor

Eleanor’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Eleanor’s Notebook” on the cover tells Eleanor it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
