Where does the name Carole come from?

Carole is the French feminine form of Carolus, the Latin form of Charles, says Behind the Name. Wikipedia points to Carl for the background, which goes back to the Germanic Karl, “free man”. So Carole is a cousin of Caroline, Carla and Charlotte, with a French spelling.

Other forms of Carole

Carol is the plain English form, and Behind the Name’s list of relatives includes Carrie, Callie and Cari. Wikipedia also lists Carola, Carolle and Carroll. Carrie is the everyday favorite.

Well-known Caroles

Carole King wrote or co-wrote 118 Billboard Hot 100 hits, including “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” for Aretha Franklin; her album Tapestry topped the US chart for 15 weeks. Her birth name was Carol Klein. Screwball comedy star Carole Lombard earned an Oscar nomination for My Man Godfrey and married Clark Gable; she died in 1942 coming home from a war bond tour.

Carole’s popularity

Carole peaked in the 1940s. US Social Security data has it at 94th in the 1930s and 57th in the 1940s, when more than 50,300 American girls were named Carole, then 193rd in the 1950s. Most Caroles today are in their 70s or 80s.

A few more things about Carole

Carole is also the name of a medieval dance, Wikipedia notes, and the Christmas carol may be named after it: the article on carols says the word may come from the French carole or the Latin carula, a circular dance. The earliest English Christmas carols are in a 1426 manuscript by John Awdlay, who recorded twenty-five “caroles of Cristemas”.

A notebook for every Carole

Carole’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Carole’s Notebook” on the cover tells Carole it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
