Vera: meaning and origin

Vera means “faith” in Russian, says Behind the Name, though it is sometimes linked to the Latin verus, “true”. Wikipedia explains that it translates the old Christian name Fides, in Greek Pistis: Saint Faith was martyred with her sisters Hope and Love and their mother Sophia, and Russian took the sisters’ names as Vera, Nadezhda and Lyubov. Behind the Name also has a separate Albanian Vera, from verë, “summer”.

Nicknames and variants

Russian has a whole set of pet forms. Behind the Name lists Verochka, Verusha and Verusya, and Wikipedia adds Verka and Verushka. Serbian and Croatian use Verica, Georgian has Veriko, and Dutch has Veertje.

Famous people named Vera

Vera Lynn, the “Forces’ Sweetheart”, sang for troops in Egypt, India and Burma during World War II and is remembered for “We’ll Meet Again” and “(There’ll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover”. Astronomer Vera Rubin found key evidence for dark matter by studying how galaxies rotate, and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile is named for her. Vera Wang trained as a figure skater and worked at Vogue before opening her bridal boutique in 1990.

Vera was a turn-of-the-century favorite. US Social Security data has it at 83rd in the 1890s, 69th in the 1900s and 65th in the 1910s, with its biggest numbers in the 1920s, when more than 32,500 American girls were named Vera. It slipped to 188th in the 1940s. Wikipedia says it has been used in English since the 19th century.

Vera trivia

How Vera can use it

Any Vera, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.

The little things that make it hers

There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Vera can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
