Heidi's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Heidi is a German diminutive of Adelheid, says Behind the Name, the German form of Adelaide, which Wikipedia says means “nobility”. In German-speaking countries it can also shorten Heidrun, Heidelinde and Heidemarie. It became an international name because of Johanna Spyri’s children’s novel Heidi (1880).
Heidi is itself a nickname, so its relatives are mostly the longer names behind it. Behind the Name lists Heida, Heide and Alida as German variants, and Wikipedia names Adelheid, Heidrun and Heidemarie.
Heidi Klum was the first German model to become a Victoria’s Secret Angel and shared an Emmy in 2013 with Tim Gunn as host of Project Runway. Planetary astronomer Heidi Hammel helped image Neptune from Voyager 2 in 1989, led the Hubble team that watched Shoemaker-Levy 9 hit Jupiter in 1994 and was chosen as an interdisciplinary scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope. Heidi Range sang with the Sugababes.
Heidi peaked when many of today’s parents were born. US Social Security data has it at 122nd in the 1960s, then 77th in the 1970s, when more than 42,000 American girls were named Heidi, and 108th in the 1980s. Behind the Name says English speakers began using it soon after the 1937 film.
Wikipedia calls Heidi one of the best-selling books ever written. Its heroine is a five-year-old girl in her grandfather’s care in the Swiss Alps, and the 1937 Hollywood version starred Shirley Temple, whose third straight year as the number one box-office draw came that year.
This is a notebook for every kind of Heidi: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Heidi’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Heidi’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
