Tonya's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Tonya began as an English short form of Antonia, says Behind the Name, or as a Russian pet form of Antonina. Wikipedia adds the influence of Toña, the Spanish form, and both sources say Tonya has been mixed up with Tanya, an unrelated name that started as a diminutive of Tatiana. It is found across the English-speaking world, but Wikipedia says it is most common in the United States.
Behind the Name gives Toni, Tonia, Tawnya and Nia as English relatives, and Wikipedia adds Tonja and LaTonya, a form it says is particularly associated with African-American women. Toni is the easy everyday choice.
Figure skater Tonya Harding was the 1991 World silver medalist, and that year she became the first American woman, and the second woman ever after Midori Ito, to land a triple Axel in international competition; she is a two-time Olympian. On Broadway, Tonya Pinkins won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Jelly’s Last Jam, and soap fans know her as Livia Frye on All My Children.
Tonya had one big decade. US Social Security data puts it at 120th in the 1960s, then 49th in the 1970s, when almost 57,800 American girls were named Tonya, and 160th in the 1980s. It has not made the top 200 for a decade since, so most Tonyas are in their late 40s or their 50s now.
Tonya Harding’s story became the 2017 film I, Tonya, with Margot Robbie, who also produced it, as Harding and Allison Janney as her mother, LaVona Golden. Wikipedia says Janney won Best Supporting Actress at the 90th Academy Awards, and Robbie was nominated for Best Actress.
This is a notebook for every kind of Tonya: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Tonya’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Tonya’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
