A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Sophie. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Sophie is the French form of Sophia, says Behind the Name, from the Greek word for “wisdom”, as Wikipedia puts it. It is used in English, German and Dutch too, and Behind the Name lists Sophy as an older English spelling.
Behind the Name gives Sophy in English and Sofie in German and Dutch, along with the Dutch pet forms Fieke and Soof. Sofia and Sophia are the fuller forms.
Sophie Turner made her acting debut as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones and played the young Jean Grey in the X-Men films. Sophie Scholl was a member of the White Rose, a nonviolent student resistance group in Nazi Germany, and was executed in 1943 at 21. French mathematician Sophie Germain won the Paris Academy of Sciences’ grand prize for her work on elasticity, and her work on Fermat’s Last Theorem shaped the subject for centuries.
Sophie has had two eras in the US. Social Security data has it in the girls’ top 200 from the 1880s to the 1920s, peaking at 108th in the 1910s, then back at 117th in the 2000s and 79th in the 2010s, when more than 35,600 American girls were named Sophie. Behind the Name shows it 22nd in New South Wales in 2025 and 21st in Canada in 2024.
Sophie Germain taught herself from books in her father’s library and wrote to Lagrange, Legendre and Gauss under the name Monsieur Le Blanc. When the Eiffel Tower was engraved with the names of 72 great French scientists, engineers and mathematicians, hers was not among them; one writer suggested it was because she was a woman.
Whether Sophie is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Sophie on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Sophie’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
