Sharon's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Sharon comes from an Old Testament place name, in Hebrew Sharon, meaning “plain”. It refers to the fertile Plain of Sharon on the central coast of Israel. The Bible also mentions the “rose of Sharon”, a name now used for several different flowers. Behind the Name says it has been used as a girls’ name in English since the 1920s, possibly inspired by the heroine of the 1925 serial novel The Skyrocket. As a Hebrew name, it is used for both boys and girls.
Shari is the classic English short form. Sharon also comes in several spellings, including Sharron and Sharyn, and Sharona is a longer version, made famous by The Knack’s 1979 hit “My Sharona”. Most Sharons, though, get by very happily with the name just as it is.
Sharon Osbourne is a music manager and TV personality, known from The Osbournes and as a judge on The X Factor. Actress Sharon Stone starred in Basic Instinct and earned an Oscar nomination for Casino. And Sharon Strzelecki, played by Magda Szubanski, is the much-loved netball-obsessed character in the Australian comedy Kath & Kim.
Sharon was a big name for babies of the 1940s and 50s. US Social Security data shows it jumping from 83rd in the 1930s to 8th in the 1940s, then 14th in the 1950s, when more than 230,000 American girls were named Sharon. It left the top 200 after the 1980s, so most Sharons today are in their 60s and 70s.
The rose of Sharon in the Bible’s Song of Songs (“I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys”) was probably not a rose at all. Today the name is used for a hibiscus, Hibiscus syriacus, and in Britain for a low St John’s wort. John Steinbeck gave the name Rose of Sharon to a character in The Grapes of Wrath (1939).
This is a notebook for every kind of Sharon: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Sharon’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Sharon’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
