Cynthia's Notebook puts her name front and center, written in flowing script across a soft watercolor apple blossom design.
Cynthia is the Latin form of the Greek Kynthia, meaning “woman from Cynthus”. It was a title of the Greek moon goddess Artemis, because Cynthus was the mountain on the island of Delos where she and her twin brother Apollo were born. Behind the Name says it was not used as a given name until the Renaissance, and didn’t become common in English until the 19th century. Poets have long used “Cynthia” as a name for the moon.
Cindy is the classic nickname, and Cindi, Cyndi and Sindy are the fun spellings. Cyndi Lauper made the “y” famous. A Cynthia might also be Cyn to her closest friends, but the full name, with its moonlit history, is hard to beat.
Cyndi Lauper, born Cynthia, sang “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and wrote the music for the Broadway hit Kinky Boots. Cynthia Nixon played Miranda in Sex and the City. And Cynthia Erivo, the British singer and actress, starred as Elphaba in the film Wicked.
Cynthia was one of the stars of the baby boom. US Social Security data has it 47th in the 1940s, 11th in the 1950s and 10th in the 1960s, with more than 263,000 Cynthias born in the 1950s alone. Behind the Name says it peaked in 1957. Most Cynthias today are in their 60s, often with grandchildren of their own.
Mount Kynthos on Delos is only a little over 100 metres high, but in Greek myth it was the birthplace of Artemis and Apollo, and the ruins of temples still stand on it. Sir Walter Raleigh and other Elizabethan poets called Queen Elizabeth I “Cynthia”, comparing her to the chaste moon goddess.
Any Cynthia, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.
There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Cynthia can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
How big is Cynthia’s Notebook? About the size of a trade paperback book: 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm), 160 lined pages.
