What does the name Sabrina mean?

Sabrina is the Latinized form of Habren, the original Welsh name of the River Severn, says Behind the Name, and Wikipedia notes the river was already recorded as Sabrina in the 2nd century. In Geoffrey of Monmouth’s legend, Sabrina was a princess drowned in the Severn and the river was named for her, though Behind the Name thinks the princess was more likely named after the river.

Sabrina nicknames and other forms

Sabrina has few official short forms. Behind the Name lists just one English variant, Sabryna, and Wikipedia mentions an Arabic form, Ṣābrīnā, linked by folk etymology to a root meaning “patience”. Anything shorter is up to the family.

Some famous Sabrinas

Sabrina Carpenter first became known as Maya Hart on the Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World; her album Short n’ Sweet topped the Billboard 200, won two Grammy Awards and produced the global number-one singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please”. Basketball’s Sabrina Ionescu went first overall in the 2020 WNBA draft, broke the league’s single-season three-point record in 2023 and helped the New York Liberty win their first championship the next year.

Sabrina through the decades

Sabrina is a late-20th-century name in the US. Social Security data has it at 124th in the 1970s and 118th in the 1980s, then 91st in the 1990s, when more than 38,600 American girls were named Sabrina, before it slipped to 150th in the 2000s. Behind the Name links its jumps to Charlie’s Angels in 1976 and to the TV versions of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Did you know?

The film that made the name famous was Billy Wilder’s Sabrina (1954), with Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and William Holden, based on Samuel Taylor’s play Sabrina Fair. Edith Head won an Oscar for the costumes, though Wikipedia notes many of Hepburn’s outfits are said to have come from Hubert de Givenchy. The teenage witch came later: Sabrina Spellman first appeared in an Archie comic in October 1962.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Sabrina is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Sabrina on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
