Rosalie's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Rosalie is the French, German and Dutch form of Rosalia, says Behind the Name, a Late Latin name from rosa, “rose”. Rosalia was a 12th-century Sicilian saint. In the English-speaking world the name got a boost from the 1938 movie Rosalie, based on an earlier musical. Wikipedia sums it up as “little rose” or “rose garden”.
Wikipedia lists Rosa, Rose, Roz and Rosie as short forms, and Rosalee as an English spelling.
Rosalie Edge was born Mabel Rosalie Barrow in New York City on November 3, 1877. Wikipedia says the suffragist and conservationist set up the Emergency Conservation Committee in 1929, and in 1934 founded Hawk Mountain Sanctuary near Kempton, Pennsylvania, the world’s first preserve for birds of prey. She clashed for decades with the Audubon Society, and a colleague called her “the only honest, unselfish, indomitable hellcat in the history of conservation”.
Rosalie belongs to the years between the wars. US Social Security data has it at 186th in the 1920s, 153rd in the 1930s and 185th in the 1940s. More than 13,700 American girls were named Rosalie in the 1930s.
Rosalie Edge’s sanctuary still counts the birds. Wikipedia says an average of 20,000 hawks, eagles and falcons pass the lookouts at Hawk Mountain in late summer and fall. Staff and volunteers count them every year, producing the world’s longest record of raptor populations. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2022.
This is a notebook for every kind of Rosalie: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Rosalie’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Rosalie’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
