Where does the name Adeline come from?

Adeline is the French and English form of Adelina, says Behind the Name, from a Germanic name built on the element adal, “noble”. Wikipedia adds that the Normans brought Adeline to England in the 11th century, and that it was very common in the Middle Ages.

Other forms of Adeline

Behind the Name lists Ada, Addie, Addy and Aline as English diminutives and Lina as a French one. Adaline and Adalyn are popular variant spellings.

Well-known Adelines

Dame Adeline Genée was born in Hinnerup, Denmark, on January 6, 1878. Wikipedia says her uncle began teaching her to dance when she was three, and when he adopted her at eight she took the first name Adeline, after the opera star Adelina Patti. She became principal dancer of the Royal Danish Ballet in 1895, then spent ten years as prima ballerina at the Empire Theatre in London from 1897. She had made her debut at ten with her uncle’s touring company in Oslo, then called Christiania.

Adeline’s popularity

Adeline has bloomed twice. US Social Security data has it in the top 200 in the 1880s and 1910s, then at 136th in the 2010s, when more than 23,300 American girls were named Adeline. Behind the Name says it ranked 59th in the US in 2025.

A few more things about Adeline

“Sweet Adeline” was nearly “Sweet Rosalie”. Wikipedia says the 1903 barbershop favorite was first titled “You’re the Flower of My Heart, Sweet Rosalie”. When no publisher bit, the writers renamed it after spotting a poster for Adelina Patti’s farewell tour. The Haydn Quartet’s 1904 recording was number one for ten weeks, and Boston mayor John F. Fitzgerald, John F. Kennedy’s grandfather, made it his theme song.

A notebook for every Adeline

Adeline’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Adeline’s Notebook” on the cover tells Adeline it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
