Give Nina a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Nina's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Nina began as a short form of names ending in -nina, such as Antonina or Giannina, says Behind the Name. It came to Western Europe from Russia and Italy in the 19th century. It nearly matches the Spanish word niña, “little girl”, and Behind the Name and Wikipedia both say Nina means “fire” in Quechua and Aymara.
Behind the Name lists Ninochka as a Russian diminutive and Ninette as a French one, with Nena in English and Niina in Finnish. Nina is so short already that most people keep it as it is.
Nina Simone was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina, in 1933. Wikipedia says she took the stage name in 1954: “Nina”, from niña, was a boyfriend’s nickname for her, and “Simone” came from the French actress Simone Signoret. Known as the High Priestess of Soul, she recorded “Feeling Good” and “Mississippi Goddam”.
Nina has been around a long time. US Social Security data has it in the top 200 from the 1880s through the 1930s, with more than 11,300 American girls named Nina in the 1920s. It came back at 199th in the 1980s.
Columbus sailed with a Niña. Wikipedia says La Niña, “the little girl”, was one of the three ships on Christopher Columbus’s first voyage in 1492. Her official name was Santa Clara, and the nickname was probably a pun on her owner, Juan Niño of Moguer. She was by far Columbus’s favorite of the three ships.
Nina’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Nina’s Notebook” on the cover tells Nina it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Nina’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
