What does the name Beulah mean?

Beulah means “married” in Hebrew, says Behind the Name. In the Old Testament it is used for the land of Israel, in Isaiah 62:4, and it has been an English given name since the Protestant Reformation. Wikipedia adds that the King James Bible kept the Hebrew word and translated it as “married”, and that writers used Beulah for a mystical place between Earth and Heaven.

Beulah nicknames and other forms

Beulah has few traditional short forms. Behind the Name gives Be’ula as the Biblical Hebrew form, and many Beulahs over the years have simply been called Bee or Beu, though the sources do not list those.

Some famous Beulahs

Actress Beulah Bondi was born in Chicago in 1888, grew up in Valparaiso, Indiana, and was on stage by age seven. Wikipedia says she was twice nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and played James Stewart’s mother in four films, including Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It’s a Wonderful Life. At 87 she won an Emmy for The Waltons.

Beulah through the decades

Beulah was a favorite around 1900. US Social Security data has it at 78th in the 1890s, 77th in the 1900s and 95th in the 1910s, when more than 18,800 American girls were named Beulah. It left the top 200 after the 1920s.

Did you know?

Beulah made television history. Wikipedia says Beulah ran on CBS Radio from 1945 to 1954 and on ABC Television from 1950 to 1953, and it was the first sitcom to star an African-American actress. Ethel Waters played the title role on TV, followed by Hattie McDaniel and Louise Beavers. The show was also controversial for its caricatures of African Americans.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Beulah is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Beulah on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
