Give Naomi a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Naomi's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Naomi comes from the Hebrew Naʿomi, meaning “my pleasantness”, Behind the Name explains, from a word meaning “to be pleasant”; Wikipedia gives the meaning simply as “pleasantness”. In the Old Testament she is Ruth’s mother-in-law. Behind the Name notes it was long common as a Jewish name but was not usually used by English Christians until after the Protestant Reformation. There is also a separate Japanese Naomi, combining kanji such as nao, “straight, direct”, and mi, “beautiful”.
Behind the Name lists no standard short forms for Naomi, but the name travels well. The Latin Bible gives Noemi, also the Italian, German and Polish form; French has Noémie and Naomie, Hungarian Noémi and Spanish Noemí.
Naomi Osaka was the first Asian player to be ranked world No. 1 in women’s singles and the first Japanese player to win a major singles title; she has won four, two each at the Australian Open and the US Open. Naomi Campbell was one of the six supermodels of her generation and the first Black woman to appear as a model on the covers of Time and Vogue France. And Naomi Watts has two Academy Award nominations.
Naomi has come back. US Social Security data has it in the girls’ top 200 from the 1890s through the 1930s, peaking at 134th in the 1910s, then missing until the 2000s, at 139th. In the 2010s it rose to 76th, with more than 36,000 American girls named Naomi. Wikipedia adds that it was among the five most popular names for Black newborn girls in Virginia in 2022 and 2023.
In the Book of Ruth, Naomi goes home to Bethlehem after her husband and sons die and asks to be called Mara, “bitter”, instead (Ruth 1:20). Her daughter-in-law Ruth’s loyalty to her drives the whole story, and Wikipedia says the book is traditionally chanted in synagogues during the festival of Shavuot.
Naomi’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Naomi’s Notebook” on the cover tells Naomi it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Naomi’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
