Where does the name Miriam come from?

Miriam is the form of Mary used in the Old Testament, says Behind the Name, where it belongs to the elder sister of Moses and Aaron. She watched over baby Moses as the pharaoh’s daughter drew him from the Nile. Wikipedia says the Torah calls her “Miriam the Prophetess”. The name has long been popular among Jews, and has been used by English Christians since the Reformation.

Other forms of Miriam

Behind the Name lists Miri as the Hebrew diminutive, with Miryam, Mirjam and Miriana as variants. Mary and Maryam are the same name in other languages.

Well-known Miriams

Miriam Makeba, nicknamed “Mama Africa”, was born in Johannesburg on March 4, 1932. Wikipedia says she became famous in the United States with Harry Belafonte’s help, and her best-known song was “Pata Pata” (1967). She and Belafonte won a Grammy for Best Folk Recording, and she testified at the United Nations against apartheid in South Africa.

Miriam’s popularity

Miriam was popular in the early 1900s. US Social Security data has it at 192nd in the 1900s, 146th in the 1910s and 156th in the 1920s, when more than 15,500 American girls were named Miriam. Behind the Name says it ranked 16th in Israel and 30th in Austria in 2024.

A few more things about Miriam

Jewish tradition gave Miriam a well. Wikipedia says the Book of Numbers records her death at Kadesh and, in the next verse, that “there was no water for the congregation”. Folk tradition explained this with a “well of Miriam” that followed the Israelites through the desert and dried up when she died. Today some seders set a cup of water for Miriam beside the traditional cup for Elijah.

Gift ideas with Miriam in mind

  • For Passover. A journal for a name with a place at the seder.
  • For a bat mitzvah. A keepsake for a big day.
  • For a world music fan. A notebook for songs from every continent.
  • For a big sister. A gift for a girl who looks out for her siblings.

A notebook for every Miriam

Miriam’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Miriam’s Notebook” on the cover tells Miriam it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
