Where does the name Eula come from?

Eula is a short form of Eulalia, says Behind the Name. Eulalia comes from the Greek eulalos, “sweetly speaking”, from eu, “good”, and laleo, “to talk”. It was the name of an early 4th-century saint from Mérida in Spain, and of another martyr of the same time who is a patron saint of Barcelona; the two may be the same person.

Other forms of Eula

Behind the Name lists Lalia as a variant of Eula, and Eulalia as the full form. In Spanish the name becomes Olalla or Olaya, and in Catalan Eulàlia or Laia.

Well-known Eulas

Eula Biss, born in 1977, is an American essayist. Wikipedia says her book Notes from No Man’s Land won the Graywolf Press Nonfiction Prize and the 2010 National Book Critics Circle Award for criticism, and On Immunity: An Inoculation was one of the New York Times Book Review’s 10 best books of 2014. She taught writing at Northwestern University for fifteen years.

Eula’s popularity

Eula was a turn-of-the-century name. US Social Security data has it in the top 200 from the 1880s to the 1920s, peaking at 126th in the 1900s, with more than 12,100 American girls named Eula in the 1920s. Behind the Name says it last ranked in the US top 1,000 in 1960.

A few more things about Eula

Barcelona throws a week-long party for Eula’s patron saint. Wikipedia says Saint Eulalia of Barcelona was martyred in 303 at the age of 13. Her remains were moved in 1339 to an alabaster tomb in the crypt of the city’s cathedral, and the Festival of Saint Eulalia is held every year for a week around her feast day on February 12.

Gift ideas with Eula in mind

  • For a trip to Barcelona. A travel journal for the February festival.
  • For a book club. Reading notes for a nonfiction lover.
  • For a speech or debate student. A notebook for a name that means “sweetly speaking”.
  • For a great-grandmother’s namesake. A memory book for a family name.

A notebook for every Eula

Eula’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Eula’s Notebook” on the cover tells Eula it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
