Where does the name Melissa come from?

Melissa means “bee” in Greek. In Greek mythology it was the name of a daughter of Procles and a title of several nymphs and priestesses. According to the early Christian writer Lactantius, Melissa was the sister of the nymph Amalthea, and the two of them cared for the baby Zeus. Later, in Ariosto’s 1532 poem Orlando Furioso, Melissa is the good fairy who helps the hero escape a witch. In English, it has been used since the 18th century.

Other forms of Melissa

Mel is the obvious short form, and Missy and Missie are the cheeky ones. Lissa works well for a Melissa who likes something softer. Behind the Name also lists Melinda, Mindy and Melina among its English relatives, so a Melissa has plenty of family names to borrow.

Well-known Melissas

Melissa McCarthy is an Emmy-winning comic actress, known for Bridesmaids and Gilmore Girls. Rock singer Melissa Etheridge won a Grammy and an Academy Award for her song “I Need to Wake Up”. And Australian actress Melissa George began her career on Home and Away.

Melissa’s popularity

Melissa was one of the big hits of the 1970s. US Social Security data has it 33rd in the 1960s and then 3rd in the 1970s, when more than 250,000 American girls were named Melissa. It stayed 7th in the 1980s and fell out of the top 200 after the 2000s, so most Melissas today are in their 40s and 50s.

A few more things about Melissa

Melissa is also the scientific name of lemon balm, Melissa officinalis, a herb that bees love, which is how it got its name. Lemon balm leaves smell of lemon and are used to make herbal tea. And because her name means “bee”, a Melissa shares it with the word for honey in Greek, meli, which comes from the same root.
