A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Marian. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Marian is a variant of Marion, says Behind the Name, and Wikipedia explains that Marion began as a French diminutive of Marie that English speakers have used since the Middle Ages. Both sources say it is sometimes treated as a blend of Mary and Ann, and Behind the Name adds that it was borne by Maid Marian, Robin Hood’s love. In Polish, Czech and Romanian, Marian is a different name altogether, a man’s name from Marianus.
The closest relatives are spellings: Behind the Name lists Marion and Merrion, and Wikipedia ties the name to Mary and Ann. The Polish and Czech namesakes have feminine forms of their own, Marianna and Mariana.
Contralto Marian Anderson sang everything from opera to spirituals and became the first Black American singer to perform at the Metropolitan Opera, in January 1955. Irish novelist Marian Keyes has sold more than 35 million copies of books such as Watermelon and Rachel’s Holiday, which take on hard subjects with humor. And Marian Seldes won the Tony Award for A Delicate Balance in 1967 and was nominated four more times.
Marian belongs to the early 20th century in the US. Social Security data has it at 86th in the 1910s and 69th in the 1920s, when nearly 39,000 American girls were named Marian, then 103rd in the 1930s and 162nd in the 1940s. Behind the Name notes a spike in several countries in 1954, after the Pope declared a Marian year.
Marian Anderson’s most famous concert happened because she was turned away. In 1939 the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to let her sing to an integrated audience in Constitution Hall, so, with help from Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt, she sang on the Lincoln Memorial steps on Easter Sunday, April 9, to more than 75,000 people and millions more on the radio.
Whether Marian is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Marian on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Marian’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
