What does the name Mariah mean?
Mariah is a variant of Maria, says Behind the Name. Wikipedia explains that it is usually pronounced mə-RY-ə, the traditional English way of saying the Latin Maria, rather than the Spanish- or Italian-style mə-REE-ə. Behind the Name says the name was popularized in the early 1990s by the singer Mariah Carey.
Mariah nicknames and other forms
Behind the Name gives Mimi as an English diminutive and Mariel as an American one. Beyond those, Mariah shares the enormous family of Maria and Mary.
Some famous Mariahs
Mariah Carey is known for her five-octave vocal range and is the only artist whose first five singles all reached number one in the US, starting with “Vision of Love”. Billboard named her its Artist of the Decade, and in 2023 Rolling Stone ranked her the fifth-greatest singer of all time. Figure skater Mariah Bell won the 2022 US national championship and the 2020 Skate America title.
Mariah through the decades
Mariah is a 1990s name in America. Wikipedia says it rose from 562nd in 1989 to 62nd in 1998, following Mariah Carey. Social Security decade data has it at 79th in the 1990s, with more than 44,600 American girls named Mariah, then 94th in the 2000s and 143rd in the 2010s.
Did you know?
Mariah Carey was named after a song. Wikipedia says her name comes from “They Call the Wind Maria”, from the 1951 Broadway musical Paint Your Wagon, a song Vaughn Monroe and his Orchestra also made a hit record of that year. Her own “All I Want for Christmas Is You” became the best-selling Christmas song in the US, and she is often called the “Queen of Christmas”.

Who is it for and how she can use it
Whether Mariah is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Why personalized works
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Mariah on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
