Makayla's Notebook puts her name front and center, written in flowing script across a soft watercolor apple blossom design.
Makayla is a variant of Michaela, says Behind the Name, and Wikipedia’s article on Michaela lists Makayla as an English form. Michaela is a feminine form of the Hebrew name Michael, which Wikipedia says means “Who is like God”. As of 2008, Wikipedia adds, Michaela itself ranked 357th for newborn girls in the US.
Behind the Name lists Mica, Mickey and Mikki as diminutives, along with a crowd of spellings: Mckayla, Mikayla, Mikaela, Michayla and Mikhaila.
Behind the Name counts Mikaela and Mckayla among Makayla’s variants, and two athletes with those spellings show the name’s reach. Mikaela Shiffrin has the most World Cup wins of any alpine skier, man or woman, and is the only one to reach 100 victories. McKayla Maroney won team gold with the “Fierce Five” at the 2012 Olympics, plus an individual silver on the vault, and in 2013 she became the first US female gymnast to defend a World Championship vault title.
Makayla rose quickly. US Social Security data has it at 156th in the 1990s, then 46th in the 2000s, when nearly 55,000 American girls were named Makayla, and 109th in the 2010s. Most Makaylas are teenagers or young adults today.
The archangel behind Makayla has his own feast day. Michaelmas, the feast of Saint Michael and the other archangels, falls on 29 September in many Western churches and on 8 November in Eastern traditions, and Wikipedia says it was one of the four quarter days of the English and Irish year, when accounts had to be settled. In Ireland, boys born on the day were often christened Michael.
Any Makayla, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.
There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Makayla can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
How big is Makayla’s Notebook? About the size of a trade paperback book: 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm), 160 lined pages.
Where do I buy it? It’s sold on Amazon in the US, Australia and the UK. Amazon prints and ships each copy and handles delivery and returns.
