Give Lydia a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Lydia's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Lydia means “from Lydia” in Greek, says Behind the Name. Lydia was a region on the west coast of Asia Minor, said to be named for a legendary king, Lydos, and Wikipedia explains that the name first marked someone from that region. In the New Testament, Lydia is a woman converted to Christianity by Saint Paul, and Behind the Name says English speakers have used the name since the Protestant Reformation.
Behind the Name lists Lyda as an English variant and Liddy as the diminutive. Liddy is the classic choice.
New Zealand golfer Lydia Ko reached world No. 1 in February 2015 at 17, the youngest player of either gender to top professional golf’s rankings. She won Olympic silver in 2016, bronze at Tokyo 2020 and gold in Paris in 2024, which made her the LPGA Hall of Fame’s youngest inductee. And in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Lydia is one of the five Bennet sisters.
Lydia had a 19th-century run and a recent return. US Social Security data has it at 79th in the 1880s and 86th in the 1890s, then out of the top 200 after the 1910s until the 1990s. It was 128th in the 2000s and 90th in the 2010s, when more than 32,700 American girls were named Lydia.
Lydia of Thyatira is regarded as the first documented convert to Christianity in Europe. Wikipedia says she was a businesswoman who dealt in purple cloth, a luxury item, and was baptized with her household in Philippi, where her house became the site of the church. She is sometimes called “The Woman of Purple”.
Lydia’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Lydia’s Notebook” on the cover tells Lydia it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Lydia’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
