A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Luna. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Luna means “the moon” in Latin, as well as in Italian, Spanish and other Romance languages, says Behind the Name. Luna was the Roman goddess of the moon, often shown driving a white chariot through the sky. Wikipedia says her Greek counterpart was Selene, and Roman art showed her with a crescent moon and a two-yoke chariot.
Luna is already short, so it rarely needs a nickname. Behind the Name lists Lune as the Dutch variant and Lúa as the Galician form, and Lulu is a sweet pet name for a little Luna.
The best-known Luna is a witch. Luna Lovegood first appears in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2003), a dreamy Ravenclaw student a year below Harry. Wikipedia says her father edits the magazine The Quibbler, and she fights alongside Harry in Dumbledore’s Army. Evanna Lynch played her in the films.
Luna is a modern star. US Social Security data has it at 83rd in the 2010s, when more than 34,100 American girls were named Luna. Behind the Name says it ranked 27th in the US in 2025, 4th in Kosovo and 12th in the Netherlands.
Luna was the first spacecraft to land gently on the Moon. Wikipedia says the Soviet probe Luna 9 touched down on February 3, 1966, in the Ocean of Storms. Its landing capsule, cushioned by an airbag, bounced several times before coming to rest, then sent back the first pictures ever taken from the surface of the Moon, including panoramas showing rocks and the horizon.
Whether Luna is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Luna on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Luna’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
