Where does the name Lola come from?

Lola is a Spanish diminutive of Dolores, says Behind the Name. Dolores means “sorrows” and comes from Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, “Our Lady of Sorrows”, a title of the Virgin Mary. Wikipedia adds that in the Philippines lola means “grandmother”, and in Nigeria many Yoruba names are shortened to Lola.

Other forms of Lola

Behind the Name lists Lolita as a Spanish diminutive, and Dolores, Dolly and Dollie as related names. Lo and Lolo are sweet pet forms, though the sources do not list those.

Well-known Lolas

Lola Montez was born Eliza Gilbert in County Sligo, Ireland, in 1821 and became famous as a Spanish dancer. Wikipedia says King Ludwig I of Bavaria made her a countess, and the Revolutions of 1848 forced her to flee. She later lived in Grass Valley, California, and toured Australia, performing her Spider Dance in Melbourne in 1855.

Lola’s popularity

Lola was a favorite in the early 1900s. US Social Security data has it at 108th in the 1900s, 135th in the 1910s and 160th in the 1920s, when more than 14,600 American girls were named Lola. Behind the Name shows it in the recent top 100 in New South Wales, England and Wales, and France.

A few more things about Lola

Lola is also a rock classic. Wikipedia says “Lola” is a song by the Kinks, written by Ray Davies for their 1970 album Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One. It reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and number nine on the Billboard Hot 100, and it appears on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

A notebook for every Lola

Lola’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Lola’s Notebook” on the cover tells Lola it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
