What does the name Lilly mean?

Lilly is an English variant of Lily, says Behind the Name, which comes from the name of the flower, a symbol of purity. The word goes back to the Latin lilium. In Scandinavia, Lilly is also used as a form of Lily or as a pet form of Elisabeth. Behind the Name points to Lily Bart, the heroine of Edith Wharton’s 1905 novel The House of Mirth, as a famous bearer of the main spelling.

Lilly nicknames and other forms

Behind the Name lists Lillie as both a variant and a diminutive of Lilly. Longer relatives include Lillian, Lilian and Liliana, and the plain flower spelling, Lily, is a variant too.

Some famous Lillys

Lilly Singh was born on September 26, 1988, and grew up in the Scarborough district of Toronto. Wikipedia says she started making YouTube videos in 2010 as “Superwoman”, and her book How to Be a Bawse (2017) became a New York Times best seller. From 2019 to 2021 she hosted NBC’s A Little Late with Lilly Singh, making her the first person of Indian descent to host an American late-night talk show.

Lilly through the decades

Lilly is a 21st-century favorite. US Social Security data has it at 192nd in the 2000s and 134th in the 2010s, when more than 23,500 American girls were named Lilly.

Did you know?

A Lilly started a fashion label by accident. Wikipedia says Lilly Pulitzer opened a fruit juice stand on Via Mizner in Palm Beach, Florida, in 1958. Squeezing juice stained her clothes, so she asked her dressmaker for something that would hide the mess: a simple shift dress in a bright printed fabric. Customers loved it, and she was soon selling more dresses than juice. The shifts became known as “Lillys”.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Lilly is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Lilly on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
