A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Laura. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Laura comes from the Latin laurus, meaning “laurel”. It was a lucky meaning, because in ancient Rome laurel leaves were woven into garlands for winners. The name was borne by a 9th-century Spanish saint, and it was the name of the woman in the love poems of the 14th-century Italian poet Petrarch. In English it has been used since the 13th century.
Laurie and Lori are the classic short forms, and Lorrie and Lorie are popular spellings. French has Laurette, Italian has Lauretta and Loretta, and Spanish has Laurita. So a Laura can go from formal to friendly with just a couple of letters.
Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote the Little House on the Prairie books, based on her own pioneer childhood. Laura Ashley built a fashion and home-furnishing business famous for its floral prints. Canadian heroine Laura Secord walked about 20 miles in 1813 to warn British troops of an American attack. And Laura Dern won an Academy Award for Marriage Story.
Laura has been a steady name for well over a century. US Social Security data has it in the top 100 every decade from the 1880s to the 1990s, peaking at 16th in the 1960s, when more than 170,000 Lauras were born. It was still in the top 200 in the 2000s, so there are Lauras in every generation, from great-grandmothers to teenagers.
Victorious Roman generals and Olympic winners in ancient Greece were crowned with laurel wreaths, which is why we still talk about “resting on your laurels”. The English word laureate, as in Nobel laureate or poet laureate, comes from the same root. Petrarch wrote more than 300 sonnets to his Laura.
Whether Laura is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Laura on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Laura’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
