What does the name Kylie mean?

Kylie arose in Australia, says Behind the Name, where it is said to mean “boomerang” in the Aboriginal language Nyungar. Wikipedia gives the Noongar word kiley, “curved, returning stick, boomerang”, and also suggests links to Kyle and to the Irish surname O’Kiely. Public records show it in Australian use at least as far back as 1877.

Kylie nicknames and other forms

Kylie is short already, so its family is spellings. Behind the Name lists Kiley, Kylee, Kyleigh and Kilie, and Wikipedia adds Kyley and Kyly, among others.

Some famous Kylies

Kylie Minogue first became known as Charlene Mitchell on Neighbours and is the highest-selling Australian-born female artist of all time, with more than 80 million records sold; “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” alone sold over twelve million units. Kylie Tennant, the novelist behind The Battlers and Ride on Stranger, may have been the modern originator of the name, Wikipedia says. And Kylie Jenner founded Kylie Cosmetics.

Kylie through the decades

Kylie took off in Australia first. Wikipedia says it was the fifth most popular girls’ name there in 1970 and second in New South Wales in 1972 to 1974; in the US it first entered the top 1,000 in 1978. Social Security data has it at 144th in the 1990s, 64th in the 2000s, when more than 46,000 American girls were named Kylie, and 77th in the 2010s.

Did you know?

Kylie Tennant was born Kathleen but was called Kylie from childhood, and the Australian Dictionary of Biography says her third novel, in 1941, made her a household name. A 1947 survey of Australian baby names noted a “general reluctance to use aboriginal words” and cited Kylie as one of the few exceptions.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Kylie is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Why personalized works

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Kylie on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
