Where does the name Kathleen come from?

Kathleen is the anglicized form of the Irish name Caitlín. Caitlín came from Cateline, the Old French form of Katherine, so Kathleen is Katherine with an Irish accent. Katherine itself comes from the Greek Aikaterine, which became linked in early Christian times with the Greek word katharos, meaning “pure”. It is one of the classic Irish-American names.

Other forms of Kathleen

Kathleen shares its nicknames with the whole Katherine family. Kathy, Kath, Kate, Katie and Kay are the most common, and Kit and Kitty are the old-fashioned favorites. Caitlin, Kathleen’s Irish original, is now a popular name of its own.

Well-known Kathleens

Kathleen Turner starred in Romancing the Stone and Body Heat and voiced Jessica Rabbit. Kathleen Kennedy produced E.T. and Jurassic Park and later ran Lucasfilm. And British scientist Kathleen Lonsdale was one of the first two women elected Fellows of the Royal Society, in 1945.

Kathleen’s popularity

Kathleen was in the US top 200 for a full century. Social Security data has it from the 1890s, climbing to 18th in the 1940s and peaking at 15th in the 1950s, when more than 224,000 American Kathleens were born. It was still in the top 100 in the 1970s and 80s, so Kathleens come in all ages, but most are in their 50s to 70s.

A few more things about Kathleen

The song “I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen” was written in 1875 by Thomas Westendorf, an American, though many people assume it is an old Irish ballad. Kathleen Ni Houlihan is a traditional figure who stands for Ireland in Irish poetry and drama, most famously in W. B. Yeats’s 1902 play Cathleen ni Houlihan.

A notebook for every Kathleen

Kathleen’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Kathleen’s Notebook” on the cover tells Kathleen it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
