Where does the name Juliana come from?

Juliana is the feminine form of the Roman name Iulianus (Julian), says Behind the Name. It was the name of a 4th-century saint and martyr from Nicomedia, and of the Blessed Juliana of Norwich, a 14th-century mystic and author also known as Julian. In England this form has been used since the 18th century, alongside the older Gillian.

Other forms of Juliana

Behind the Name lists Julianna and Julianne as English variants, with Liana and Leanna as diminutives. In German the name becomes Juliane, with the short form Liane.

Well-known Julianas

Queen Juliana of the Netherlands was born on April 30, 1909, at Noordeinde Palace in The Hague, the only child of Queen Wilhelmina. Wikipedia says she studied international law at the University of Leiden and became queen in 1948. She abdicated in favor of her eldest daughter, Beatrix, in 1980. When she died in 2004 at the age of 94, she was the longest-lived former reigning monarch in the world.

Juliana’s popularity

Juliana has been steady this century. US Social Security data has it at 173rd in the 2000s and 159th in the 2010s, with more than 20,000 American girls named Juliana in each decade.

A few more things about Juliana

Ottawa’s tulips are a thank-you note from Juliana’s family. Wikipedia says Juliana and her children sheltered in Canada during the Second World War, and Princess Margriet was born at the Ottawa Civic Hospital in 1943, in a maternity ward the Canadian government temporarily declared extraterritorial. In 1945 the Dutch royal family sent 100,000 tulip bulbs to Ottawa. The Netherlands still sends 20,000 bulbs a year, and the Canadian Tulip Festival is held every May.

A notebook for every Juliana

Juliana’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Juliana’s Notebook” on the cover tells Juliana it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
