Jodi's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Jodi is a feminine variant of Jody, says Behind the Name. Jody began as a diminutive of Josephine, Joseph, Joanna and other names beginning with Jo. As a girls’ name, Behind the Name adds, it probably got a boost from the similar-sounding Judy, which was at the height of its American popularity when Jody was rising.
Behind the Name lists Jo, Jodie, Jody, Joey, Josie and Posy among the variants. Jo is the obvious short form, and Jodie and Jody are the spellings most people will try first.
Jodi Picoult was born in Nesconset, on Long Island, in 1966 and studied creative writing at Princeton University. Wikipedia says she has published 30 novels, with about 40 million copies in print in 34 languages, and her novels include Nineteen Minutes (2007) and My Sister’s Keeper, which became a 2009 feature film. She has also written several issues of Wonder Woman.
Jodi peaked in the 1960s and 1970s. US Social Security data has it at 145th in the 1960s and 104th in the 1970s, when more than 30,300 American girls were named Jodi. Over those two decades more than 57,000 baby girls got the name.
A boy in a famous novel helped make the name. Behind the Name says Jody was popularized by the young hero of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ novel The Yearling (1938) and its 1946 film. Wikipedia adds that The Yearling was the best-selling novel in the United States in 1938, with more than 250,000 copies sold, and won the 1939 Pulitzer Prize for the Novel.
This is a notebook for every kind of Jodi: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Jodi’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Jodi’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
